EUGENE SANGER
(b. 1928) Infamous Union surgeon at the Elmira Prison, best remembered for 386 deaths there between Aug. 1864 and Dec. 22, 1864, labeled "the Scourge of Elmira" by the prisoners. Bold signature on a 7" x 3" sheet taken from an autograph album, in full: "Eugene Sanger Surgeon U.S. Vols. Genl. Sherman's Satff". Ink docket at bottom left clear of signature, mounting traces to verso, very good.
