Description:

ENFIELD PATTERN 1853 RIFLE-MUSKET
Percussion Enfield rifle, 39" barrel, 52" overall, a Pattern 1853 rifle-musket, .577 caliber, imported in large numbers and used by both sides during the Civil War. The rifle features three steel barrel bands, with a full length tapered ramrod. The trigger guard and butt plate are brass. The lockplate is marked with a Victoria crown behind the hammer, and with "1862 Tower", for the arsenal at the Tower of London. The right-hand side of the butt bears a circular maker''s mark: "Chas. Reeves Toledo Works Birmingham", with a Victoria crown over "S H G 3" on the top of the butt. The left-hand side of the rear of the barrel bears several proof marks, including two instances of the numeral "25" and "R + B". A small numeral "5" is stamped on the wrist, and a small, possibly American inspector''s marks is present on the left side of the stock ahead of the wrist. The toe of the butt appears to bear a small period repair, and the original ladder sight is present, although the adjustment slider is missing. The barrel and other metal fittings shows a dark brown patina overall, with only very slight pitting and no active rust. The bore is dark and displays the same brown patina, but the rifling is still apparent. An excellent, unaltered example of a classic Civil War rifle.
