Description:

ENFIELD PATTERN 1853 RIFLE-MUSKET WITH BAYONET
Percussion Enfield rifle, 39" barrel, 52" overall, a Pattern 1853 rifle-musket, .577 caliber, imported in large numbers and used by both sides during the Civil War. The rifle features three steel barrel bands, with a full length tapered ramrod. The trigger guard and butt plate are brass. The lockplate is marked with a Victoria crown behind the hammer, and with "1862 Tower", for the arsenal at the Tower of London. The left-hand side of the rear of the barrel bears several proof marks, including two instances of the numeral "25". The underside of the wrist, immediately behind the brass trigger guard, bears two crisp proof marks, the first a "W" over a crown, and the second a crown over "B" over "STA" over "3". The toe of the butt bears a period repair, and the original ladder sight is present. The barrel and other metal fittings shows a dark brown patina overall, with only very slight pitting and no active rust. The rifling is well-worn, but still apparent, and the bore retains much of its brightness. Also present is a socket bayonet for the Enfield rifle, 17 1/4" blade, 20 1/2" overall, marked "JP" and with a British crown proof mark on the ricasso. Bears a dark patina with negligible pitting, and one chip to the blade. An excellent, unaltered example of a classic Civil War rifle.
