Description:

EMPRESS MARIA-THERESA'S RELIGIOUS WATERCOLORS
MARIA THERESA (1717-1780) Archduchess of Austria and Queen of Hungary, lost Silesia and Austrian lands in Italy, allied herself with France bringing on the Seven Years War. Mother of Marie Antoinette, the last queen of France before the French Revolution during which she was executed. Two very rare and attractive religious-themed watercolors on paper once owned by the queen, each 4 1/4 x 6 5/8 in. (sight), ca. early 1700s. One image depoicts Jesus bearing the cross on the Via Dolorosa as he is beaten by Roman soldiers, the second depicts him ascending to Heaven and carrying a banner with a St. George's Cross. Both images are entirely hand-painted and accented in gold, and display excellent artistic quality. Both paintings are set in period decorated wood framed with ink attributions penned on the verso. The inscriptions, blurred but largely legible and in Latin, read in part: 'Maria Theresia Imperatrix Mariano [?] R. Inter[?] Cotera[?] Plura Donat'. This perhaps refers to the recipeint or donor of these paintings. The reverse also bears two very old paper inventory tags as well. From the personal collection of one of the world's largest private collections devoted to the French Revolution and Napoleon I, as well as the First and Second World Wars.
