Description:

A BOOK BELONGING TO JOSEPH BONAPARTE AS KING OF NAPLES
JOSEPH BONAPARTE (1768-1844) French statesman, lawyer, diplomat and older brother of Napoleon Bonaparte. During the Napoleonic Wars, the latter made him King of Naples (1806–1808), and then King of Spain (1808-1813). After the fall of Napoleon, Joseph styled himself Comte de Survilliers and emigrated to the United States, where he settled in New Jersey on the Delaware River, not far from Philadelphia. Very rare book which once belonged to Bonaparte during his very short reign as King of Naples and dedicated to him as king, 'Eclogue on Joseph of Naples Bonaparte the Most Serious and Mighty of Both Sicilies, the Great King of the Empire of the Galls...' by Nicolas Soranus (Rome: Aloysii Perego Savioni), 1808. The text, partly in Latin and Italian, is a series of poems and monologues explicitly praising Bonaparte and his reign. The book is bound in brown leather with heavily gilt covers, both bearing Joseph's arms as King of Naples. Covers are scuffed and worn in places, and a pervious owner attempted to restore some worn spots in two or three very small areas, otherwise the covers are in very good condition, the contents fine. Joseph Bonaparte possessed this title for but two years before being replaced by his sister's husband, Joachim Murat. Joseph was then made King of Spain in August 1808, soon after the French invasion. Excessively rare, and in fine condition. From the personal collection of one of the world's largest private collections devoted to the French Revolution and Napoleon I, as well as the First and Second World Wars.
