Description:

(ELECTION OF 1860) WILLIAM BIGLER
(1814 - 1880) Governor of Pennsylvania and Senator, opposed to slavery but voted for the Fugitive Slave Act and the pro-slavery Kansas-Nebraska Act. Good political content A.L.S. , 2pp. 8vo., [n.p., n.d., ca. 1860] to James Buchanan's personal secretary, Adam J. Glossbrenner and marked "Confidential". In part: "...The fear of a common effort for the electoral ticket now in the field is gaining favor...it can be done without sacrifice of position or feeling. The Breckinridge by that arrangement simply say they prefer [?] Douglas & his principles to Mr. Lincoln & his principles and the Douglas men prefer Mr. B. to Mr. L. that is all I can see no humiliation in it may save Foster, at least throw the election into the House. The indications favor Breckinridge and Lane everywhere. I do not think Douglas is to have any party South except in Mo. and Mr. D. I mean any hope..." Near fine. In actuality, Pennsylvania went with neither Breckinridge nor Lincoln, but with compromise candidate John Bell.
