EDWARD VII
(1841 - 1910) King of Great Britain and Ireland, eldest son of Queen Victoria who because of his indiscretions was kept in the dark concerning matters of state until he succeeded to the throne following his mother's death. His reign was marked by more openness and visibility of the royal family. A.L.S. as Prince and heir to the English throne, 3pp., 12mo., Cowes Castle, August 26, 1878, a letter of condolence to a friend after the death of his mother. In part: "...No words of mine can describe to you how deeply I condole & sympathize with you at the loss of your dear & kind mother. Having known her from my earliest childhood I can appreciate all the more the irreparable loss you have sustained...You will I hope allow Sir Dighton Probyn to attend the funeral as my representative as I should like to show all possible respect to the memory of one who I have always considered one of my most valued friends...". Sir Dighton Probyn had at that time already received England's highest military award, the Victoria Cross, and would go on to become general. Minor age toning, else fine.
