EDWARD SHIPPEN, SR.
(1703-1781) Prominent Pennsylvania merchant and government official who was elected Mayor of Philadelphia in 1744. Father of Edward Shippen (1729-1806), the father-in-law of Benedict Arnold. A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., Lancaster, Sept. 21, 1768 to James Reed of Reading concerning a proposed journey from Lancaster to Philadelphia and religious matters with an interesting reference to the revivalist George Whitfield. He writes, in part: "...I had fixed upon next Friday for the time of Setting off for Philadelphia, and So I had told my Son Joseph: but receiving a very interesting letter from him yesterday to come away a day Sooner, I have determined (God willing) to start early tomorrow morning, as his in adding is to be on Monday or Tuesday next; at which, the young Lady's brother Samuel & Joseph Galloway Eqrs. are supposed[?] to be....you frequently take in sending me fine quotations is certainly very obliging and particularly your last; out of the works of that Child of God, the lovely Mr. Romaine [?], and if you had not been pleased to assure me that he is brother to that other Son of God (our Dear Savior Says that good Christians are Sons, & joint heirs, with himself) the Rev. G[eorge]. Whitfield, who will shake hands with one another ten thousand times oftener[?] in Heaven above, than on or[?] they have done on Earth beneath..." With partial integral address leaf addressed in his hand to Reed. Losses and tears to address leaf, letter bears the usual folds and a few very minor marginal tears, but is in otherwise very good to fine condition.
