Description:

EARLY ALLGEMEINE-SS UNTERSTURMFUHER'S DRESS TUNIC
Allgemeine-SS tunic, a 'project' piece for the ambitious collector. The original heavy black wool tunic, once used in the Soviet Union for filmmaking, bears some film-demanded alterations to the various insignia, but its bones are good. The 'SS' collar tab on the right has been removed, while the left rank tab, showing rank of an Untersturmfuhrer, is stitched to the collar, with the attachment pins of the pips having been pushed all the way through the collar. Although hard to be certain without removing from the tunic, we suspect the body of this rank tab is original, but most likely the pips are post war. Likewise, the collar piping, part of which has been lost, may also have been replaced. The single epaulet is undoubtedly a replacement as well. The front of the tunic bears four pebbled buttons, some replaced, as do each of the four scalloped pockets. The single vent in the rear of the tunic bears a pair of pebbled button styled belt hooks, so constructed as to support a belt. A genuine SS armband is been tacked to the left arm, though it bears substantial moth damage, and a cloth, unbacked ribbon bar has been sewn to the left breast - it appears to be authentic on its face. Only one of the two original side belt hooks is present, showing a pebbled finish. Within, the fully-lined tunic is tattered, and bears the original ink stamp of its maker 'Alois Heiss' along with the '1939' production date and various production and control numbers. The body of the garment itself, despite the defects named here, is quite good - it displays no mothing, and only showing small repairs at the buttons on the rear vent and at the site of the missing belt loop. A good example begging for a proper restoration.
