Description:

Fine content T.L.S. as President on White House letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Washington, Dec. 9, 1960 to Norman Cousins, editor of the Saturday Review, discussing the possible content of his historic farewell address of Jan. 17, 1961 in which he warned the nation of the increasing power of the "military industrial complex". In part: "....It was most generous of you to offer your services for drafting a farewell talk...At the moment I am not altogether certain as to just what form such a presentation should take -- whether in fact it ought to be a written message, a brief talk before the Congress, or a television address delivered from my office as you suggest. Certainly if you have any specific thoughts they would be helpful. In any case, I am reviewing the alternatives and hope to reach a decision soon..." As it turned out, Eisenhower took Cousins' suggestion and delivered his address on television. Fine condition.
