Description:

DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
(1890 - 1969) 34th President of the United States, Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II and largely responsible for the successful invasion on D-Day. Important partly-printed D.S. "Dwight D. Eisenhower" twice, 2pp. 4to., New York, [n.p., possibly occupied Germany], Dec. 31, 1945, being Eisenhower's first acceptance into the Military Order of the World Wars as a Life Member. The document is essentially a pre-approved application, originally approved by the membership of the New York chapter on June 25, 1945, and was sent to Ike to be filled-in by him and signed. The future president types-in his service record up to 1918, adding that a typed biography bore further details (copy included), he notes his birth date and place, where and when he entered the armed forces ("Fort Sam Houston, Texas, Sept. 13, 1915"), the dates of his first and last commissions ("Dec. 20, 1944 Gen. of Army Inf."), adding "Still in service", his class ("West Point 1915"), and so on. Ike is nominated by telegraph heir Charles Hann, Jr. and a descendant of Union Gen. William W. Belknap. A chip from a staple tear at one margin, else very good. The Military Order of the World Wars was founded in 1919 by officers who had served under General of the Armies John J. "Black Jack" Pershing. In fact, the Order was originally named "The American Officers of the Great War", and was incorporated by an act of Congress on Jan. 27, 1919 . The Order was intended to be the successor to the Society of the Cincinnati for Washington's Officers of the Continental Army and the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of Federal Officers who served in the Civil War. So, a General of the Armies joins an organization of officers founded to pay homage to a General of the Armies.
