(DUELS AND MURDER) JOHN SMITH T.
(1771 - 1836) Texas and Missouri land speculator and weapons manufacturer, best known as being a notorious duelist. He added the 'T.' in his name to differentiate himself having such a common name, and it is said is stood for one of his home states, 'Tennessee'. It was rumored that during his lifetime he had killed as many as 15 men and he carried two pistols in a belt around his body, two pocket pistols in a side coat pocket, and a Bowie knife. Smith also was involved in Aaron Burr's plot to seize illegally establish an independent country from the southwestern U.S. and part of Texas. At one point he had a run-in with Sam Houston who would not duel him, believing that Smith wore an iron plate beneath his clothing. If a fight broke out, Houston claimed he would instead stab Smith in the neck! Excessively rare A.D.S., 1p. 12mo., [n.p.], May 6, 1826, a request to a 'Mr. Lamarque' to pay to one Thomas Gipson the sum of eight dollars. Ragged margins, a large chip at lower-left, none affecting text, else very good.
