Description:

DRESS TUNIC OF GERMAN GENERAL-MAJOR HELLMUTH HIEPE
Elaborate wool dress tunic of German Gen. Maj. HELLMUTH HIEPE (1889-1959). Hiepe commanded Art. Reg. 17 until late 1939, and then commanded the Waffenmeisterschule for army armorers for about one year. He then had a related command before ending the war in command of the 413 Replacement Division. Hiepe and his division were one of the last defenders of Nuremberg before the city fell to the Americans. This early tunic bears large, carefully-crafted gold bullion collar tabs on red backing sewn to either side of the dark green felt-covered collar. Entwined gold and silver wire shoulder boards are sewn to the tunic and they too indicate Hiepe's high rank. A gold bullion German eagle and swastika has been embroidered upon a green felt backing and that elaborate insignia has been applied above the right breast pocket. The jacket is further fitted with four pleated pockets which each have a scalloped flap and are secured with gold pebbled buttons. There are numerous loops which secured Hiepe's ribbon bar and other decorations, and these show obvious use. There are a few very small moth holes along the top of the collar and one at the bottom of the jacket, and there is a small period repair beneath the left chest pocket. Hiepe fitted the interior of the tunic with a watch pocket. The tailor,"J. Weber Sohn", has written Hiepe's name on a cloth tag sewn within, as well as the date of delivery, August 6, 1940. Overall very good, an excellent example.
