Description:

DR. GEORGE E. GOODFELLOW
(1855-1910) Tombstone surgeon specializing in the treatment of gunshot wounds. After graduating from medical school in 1876, Goodfellow spent a short time in private practice before serving as an assistant surgeon in Tucson, then relocating to Tombstone in 1880. He was soon regarded as the state's leading authority on treating gunshot wounds, and became a close friend of the Earps. On Dec. 28, 1881 he had just walked past Virgin Earp when the latter was shot in an assassination attempt. Very rare partial A.L.S. "George E. Goodfellow", 9pp. 4to. (first page lost, bottom of last page, likely a postscript, also lost), [Los Angeles, Aug., 1896], to his daughter Edith. Goodfellow relates an amusing tale of a bear hunt in the area of San Bernardino. He and his fellow hunters have to deal with their pack mules who constantly outwit their careless masters in an attempt to return to their ranch. The accompanying illustrated envelope is from the Hollenbeck Hotel in Los Angeles, owned and managed by Albert Bilicke. Bilicke grew up in Tombstone, shot a man there, and his father was owner of Tombstone's Cosmopolitan Hotel and a friend of the Earps. The Hollenbeck was also a frequent stop for Wyatt Earp as he passed through town. Despite missing portions, very good.
