Donatien Alphonse Marquis De Sade (1740 1814 French author confined for much of his life to various prisons for sexual perversions, author of erotic novels who described sadism and whose name is the source of the word A.L. S. (a copy for his wife I p. 4to vincennes Dec. 12 1781 to an unidentified correspondent (Madame de Montreuil). De Sade warmly entreats the lady to assist his wife financially. In part In the situation of my wife I ask of you to find enclosed this money payment order to your personal attention She could be bothered or embarrassed if she has no money De Sade urges her to let his wife lack for nothing and adds that if his letter is insufficient guarantee he will sign any other paper note act that may be needed Montreuil was de Sade's mother-in-law, and often tried to compel her daughter to write accusatory letters to de Sade while he was imprisoned.
