Description:

Very unusual and scarce typed D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., Gross-Rosen, Oct. 22, 1942, a death notice for a prisoner at the infamous concentration camp. In full: "The camp doctor of the concentration camp Gross-Rosen certifies that the bricklayer Siegmund Pamula, born on April 22, 1903 in Krakow, died on September 5, 1942 in Gross-Rosen. Cause of death: phlegmon and sepsis." Causes of death were frequently falsified in records kept by the camps to disguise the brutal treatment and blatant execution of prisoners. The notice is signed at the conclusion in blue ink by WILHELM JOBST (1912-1947) camp doctor for Gross-Rosen from 1939 to 1942, later doctor for Sachsenhausen and Mauthausen. He was sentenced to death in the Mauthausen-Gusen camp trials. The document shows extensive folds with heavy splits repaired with aged cello tape, with additional cello tape at the edges affixing it to a backing sheet, with some foxing, still very good, and a sobering attestation to the miserable conditions of the camps.
