Large archive of 37 documents related to a Jewish citizen of Hamburg, Leo Jacobsohn, his Lutheran wife, Frida Mehrens, and their family, providing a minutely detailed view of their prewar life, trials and tragedies during the Third Reich, and the family's postwar attempts to claim restitution for Leo, who died in the Theresienstadt concentration camp close to the war's end. Includes, in small part: Leo Jacobson's "Ausschliessungsschein" ("exclusion certificate"), 1p. 8vo., Hamburg, April 15, 1944, barring him from military service and identifying him as a Jew, using the compulsory middle name "Israel", includes his signed identification photo; Jacobsohn's birth certificate, 1p. folio, Hamburg, Aug. 6, 1888, listing his religion as Jewish and notarized with a his hand-written notice dated Jan. 28, 1939 that he will take on the middle name "Israel"; the certificate certifying the marriage between Leo Jacobsohn and Frida Mehrens, 1p. folio, 1916, listing both of their religions and notarized with a hand-written notice dated Dec. 23, 1938 that Leo will change his middle name; Leo Jacobson's mimeographed death certificate in Czech, 1p. 4to., Terezin, June 10, 1945, certifying that he died in Theresienstadt on May 26, 1945, with no cause of death listed; a certificate in German and English, 1p. oblong 8vo., Hamburg, June 13, 1945, certifying that Frida Jacobsohn has submitted documentation confirming that she was married to a Jewish partner to the Union of People Persecuted by the Nuremberg Racial Laws; a form submitted by Frida Jacobsohn to the "Committee of Former Political Prisoners - Association of Victims of the Nazi Regime", 1p. 4to., Hamburg, [n.d.], listing the actions taken by the Nazis against the Jacobsohn family "...due to racial reasons...", including "...hindrance of professional practice, compulsory re-accommodation with three families in one flat... Gestapo house searches, detention in KZ Theresienstadt..." The group further contains numerous additional documents related to the family, including additional birth certificates, Leo Jacobsohn's World War I "Militarpass" and service certificate, claim forms and a property list for possessions lost in the destruction of their apartment during an air raid, Hamburg police records forms for Leo and Frida Jacobsohn, wartime tax forms, Frida's Lutheran confirmation certificate, and much else. All show file holes and folds, else generally very good. Should be seen, and certainly worthy of further research.
