83. JEFFERSON DAVIS A.L.S. "Jefferson Davis", 3pp, written on a folded 8vo lettersheet, Vicksburg, June 4, 1877. Davis writes J. A. Hayes in Memphis: "Yours of the 31st...has been received. I thank Margaret and yourself for the spirited decision and am proud of my children. The decision of the suit was rendered today, my lawyer telegraphed to me as follows 'The Court reversed Hill's decision and decided the case in your favor in every particular.' I shall through the business I have to attend to here and then go on to see you. Perhaps I may get off on the S. boat which leaves here, but that depends on the return of my lawyer who will bring the details of the decision of the Supreme Court and perhaps a petition to be laid before the chancery court for an order which will enable the executors to carry out the spirit of the will, the execution of it according to the letter having become impossible. I am anxious to see the little man, and yearn to embrace my daughter. Mrs. Davis has not written to me since she left (?). It is possible she has delayed for more definite conclusion as to whether she would sail this season; on being fearful of giving me trouble in going to meet her if the time of her arrival were proximately known. I fear the exhaustion of seasickness will be injurious to her and therefore advised her if not materially better to remain until fall, and go with Winnie and Pinnie to Scotland for the Summer. Mrs. Meredith should think of her child, if not of me, the dear little girl must be mortified by the delay. With love to my daughters, a grand son, and to Willie I am ever affectionately...".
