Description:

84. JEFFERSON DAVIS A.L.S. "Jefferson Davis", 3pp., 8vo, Brierfield [Mississippi], May 17, 1887, to Varina Davis whom he addresses "Dear Wife", written on the first three pages of a folded, lined lettersheet. In part: "...I arrived last night and came in darkness...to our old home. It was about midnight but Mrs. Crozier was waiting to receive me, and expressed her disappointment in not seeing you with me. After leaving New Orleans an attack of the disease from which you had provided me with a remedy seized me, and was accompanied by purging, I am now relieved but not so entirely as to make me ride out. The information gathered from Mrs. Crozier and Mr. Hudson is in the main favorable. I will have to see before making final judgment on the state of affairs. Mr.(?) had not completed his examination of plantation accounts and I have no more light on the subject than was possessed when leaving home. There was an evident reluctance to change the manner of settlement, but it is said to be in progress. Mr. [Philanzo] Payne had laid the order away to be answered by the next trip of the boat and they were supplied accordingly. There was no intention to decline furnishing. The crop so far sown is promising though a little late. You need have no anxiety about my health. I will be careful and if not quite well will leave without standing on the order of going. Give my love to our baby. I am hoping to hear from you and to have the last news of our dear ones in Colorado. Especially about my little man. With kind remembrance to Hugh who will be your guard and shield in my absence, and good wishes to Charles and the rest of our household, I am ever affectionately solicitous for your speedy recovery, your Husband..". Written from the Warren County, Mississippi plantation which was restored to Davis following a lengthy legal entanglement. In fine condition. 2,000 - 3,000
