Description:

DAVID RUMPH JONES
(1825 - 1863) Confederate major general who fought at First and Second Bull Run, in the Seven Days, and at Sharpsburg. Died of disease in Richmond. Rare and important war-date manuscript D.S. "D. R. Jones" as Assistant Adjutant General in the South Carolina Provisional Army, 1p. 4to., Charleston, April 25, 1861. Jones sends "General Order No. 34" to Brig. Gen. JOHN DUNOVANT (1825-1864): "Commanding Sullivan Island" who had been at Fort Moultrie when Fort Sumter was shelled only eleven days earlier. In the order, Jones advises Catpain STEPHEN DILL LEE (1833-1908): "...being the senior engineer Officier present for duty, is assigned the position of Chief Engineer and will assume the control of all engineer work in this harbour or vicinity...". Fine. Lee would later rise through the ranks to become a lieutenant general and would direct artillery at Second Bull Run and Antietam, and lead a corps at Atlanta and in the Carolinas. Interestingly, Lee was one of the men tasked with obtaining Major Robert Anderson's surrender of Fort Sumter on April 11th, transmitting the thrteat of the Confederate bombardment should the Yankees hold out. Following Anderson's surrender, the responsibility for the repair of the fort and the Confederate fortifications fell upon Lee. Fine condition.
