Description:

DAVID BEN-GURION
(1886 - 1973) Israeli politician, proclaimed the independence of Israel in 1948, headed the provisional government, and was later Prime Minister. Rare T.L.S. on State of Israel letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Jerusalem, Apr. 20, 1956, in Hebrew to Pinchas Sapir, Secretary of Commerce and Industry, in part: "...I am sorry...I could not participate in the opening of the Industrial Section...in your city of Haifa. The clouds are darkening and not dispersing even for one minute in our land. The situation is forcing us to check every minute. Not only will the Army stand a high test, also the strength of the whole economy and our first industrial opportunity will stand our national test...". Ben-Gurion is likely referring to The Suez Crisis (or Tripartite Aggression) of 1956, fought by Great Britain, France and Israel against Egypt. Two file holes to right margin, lightly and evenly toned, very good.
