CURRIER & IVES MEMORIAL TO A DECEASED ANDERSONVILLE PRISONER
Rare printed memorial by Currier & Ives titled "THE SOLDIER'S GRAVE", approx. 12" x 14", a hand-colored printing first issued in 1862 depicting a tombstone which bears an eagle and shield at top with the legend "IN MEMORY OF", with the printed legend at bottom: "A BRAVE AND GALLANT SOLDIER AND A TRUE PATRIOT. His toils are past; his work is done; And he is fully blest - He fought the fight, the victory won, And enters into rest.". A grieving woman weeps beside the grave, as a line of armed soldiers marches into the distance. This engraving was sold to grieving families in the North for them to upon which to inscribe the name of their deceased soldier family member. In this case, the name added is that of "Henry Bierman" who is indicated as having died at Andersonville on Sep. 9, 1864. In an early frame, in near fine condition. Pvt. Henry Bierman enlisted with the 85th N.Y. Infantry on Sep. 2, 1861 and was captured at Plymouth, N.C. on Apr. 20, 1864. He died of disease at Andersonville on Sep. 9, 1864.
