Description:

BATTLE OF MOBILE BAY CONFEDERATE FLAG RELIC
A terrific relic from the Battle of Mobile Bay, a 2" x 1.5" white cloth section of the flag flying atop the Confederate Fort Morgan during the battle. The flag swatch is age toned but otherwise fine, and is handsomely mounted to red backing. The relic is contained within a pearl cardboard mount with a b/w print of the battle above and a printed description of the swatch and battle below. Certified letter of provenance on verso indicates that the relic was captured by Union Fleet Surgeon James C. Palmer, who retrieved the flag upon entry into Fort Morgan after it had been shot down during the fighting. Union forces led by Admiral David Farragut assaulted Mobile Bay for weeks before forcing a Confederate surrender. It is at this battle that Farragut uttered his famed command: "Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!"
