Description:

DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (1890 - 1969) 34th President of the United States, Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe during World War II and largely responsible for the successful invasion on D-Day. The most desirable of all of Eisenhower's works, his military memoir: "Crusade in Europe" (Garden City: Doubleday & Company), 1948. Limited signed edition, no. 444/1426, 560pp. 8vo., in tan cloth with gold and black title on spine, black facsimile signature on front cover. This rare edition bears a facsimile of Eisenhower's "D-Day Order of the Day", signed by Eisenhower in black ink at the conclusion. Additionally, the half-title page has been inscribed to author David Batten by Eisenhower's future vice president and a president himself, RICHARD M. NIXON, who dates his signature January 25, 1981. Nixon also served in World War II, although being a Quaker he would have qualified for an exemption. Promoted lieutenant, Nixon became Officer in Charge of the Combat Air Transport Command at Guadalcanal and at Nissan Island, just north of Bougainville. Upon his return to the U.S., Nixon was appointed the administrative officer of the Alameda Naval Air Station in California and retired with the rank of commander. With slipcase, very fine condition.
