Description:

DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (1890 - 1969) 34th President of the United States, Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II and largely responsible for the successful invasion on D-Day. Rare A.L.S. "Dwight D. Eisenhower" on his personal "Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force" letterhead, 1p. 8vo., [England, ca. mid to late 1944], to "Hue", obviously a close friend. Ike opens his letter saying that he has tried to call several times but has always met with line trouble: "Maybe I'm just impatient" he observes. He thanks his friend for sending a note: "...the language of your appreciation is far too generous!" and continues: "Just when the 'party' will start home I do not know. Early next week is my guess. I am totally busy, the more so that my chief helper, here [likely Kay Summersby] is gone. Since returning from Normandy, I've been trying to catch up - not very successfully..." Fine condition, very nicely matted with the transmittal envelope initialed: "D.E." but recipient not visible, all set into a gilt wood frame.
