Lot 40
40. CONNECTICUT
SIGNERS OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE An important manuscript D.S., 4pp. legal folio, Hartford, May, 1766, headed "Debenture of the House of Representatives", a list of payments made to over 120 Connecticut soldiers and politicians, almost all of whom have signed acknowledging receipt of the payment made to them. Among those signing are Signers OLIVER WOLCOTT who signs as captain of a company of militia, and a lengthy A.E.S. of WILLIAM WILLIAMS signing as Clerk at conclusion indicating that the foregoing expenses had been read and approved for payment. Not all of the other signatures have been researched by us, though some names do leap out, including Nathan Hale's father RICHARD HALE, JABEZ HAMLIN, BENJAMIN TALLCOTT, JOSIAH MEIGS, HENRY GLOVER, JABEZ FITCH, BENJAMIN SUMNER, and an apparent proxy signature of ISRAEL PUTNAM. Very good condition, and certainly worthy of further research as many of these men undoubtedly went on to greater glory. $700-900
