Description:

CONFEDERATE SURGEON'S LETTER
Fine content A.L.S. of Asst. Surgeon William W. Wilkerson, serving the 16th and 25th Louisiana, 2pp. 8vo., "Camp Four miles Above Dalton Ga." Nov. 29, 1863 to his sister reporting on the aftermath of the Confederate defeat at Missionary Ridge four days earlier. In part: "I am sorry to inform you that since the battle of Missionary Ridge, Capt. Wikerson is one of the missing. All of the officers of the regiment are sure he was captured and not killed or wounded. About half of the regiment was captured. Only one of his Leiut's & four or five of his men escaped. The Brigade was flanked on the right and left - and only those that took time by the [?] or were first to leave their colors made their escape. I shall send his clothing - to you - I saw him early - the day of the fight. He - had just come down from Lookout Mountain where his Brigade had been sent during the night to check the advance of the enemy. In this little fight he told me that he did not lose a man - he looked better than I had ever seen him and was in fine sprits...". As it turned out, Simon C. Wilkerson was captured at Missionary Ridge, and sent to Louisville Military Prison, and then on to Johnson's Island. He was released in June 1865. Usual folds, else very good.
