Description:

CONFEDERATE SOLDIER'S LETTER
A.L.S. of Pvt. Robert M. Rucker of the 2nd Tennessee, 4pp. 4to., "Camp Dave Currin" Dec. 8, 1861 to his parents discussing guarding the Potomac against Federal incursions. He writes, in small part: "...Our Camp has bee moved...south of our former camp across the Chopawamisic to this place, a distance of 3 1/2 miles and within a mile and a quarter of the River P----...military dutes are not so great...now only having to stand Pickett on the bank of the Potomac Just south of the little run, Chopawamisic ...once every ninth night...we were out on duty on the banks of the River, to guard the river and prevent the yankees from landing on our side, their pickets fires at night...some twelve or thirteen of them on the opposite bank every night, guarding that bank of the Potomac they think we are going to cross over to attack them, and vice versa... ". In October 1861, Confederate forces constructed batteries at Evansport along the Potomac and by December nearly 37 guns guarded the river effectively cutting off Washington from the sea. On January and March 1862 Union gunboat operations effectively cleared the batteries and cleared the Potomac to Union river traffic once again. Moderate toning along usual folds, else very good.
