Description:

CONFEDERATE SHIP REGISTRY CERTIFICATE
Rare partly-printed registration of a merchant vessel, undoubtedly a blockade runner flying the Confederate flag. The document, 1p. folio, 15" x 17 1/4" (sight), Mobile, Sep. 17, 1861, is entitled "Confederate States of America, Register of Vessels". The certificate bears a fine engraving of a maritime scene at top, and reads, in part: "... John Cook, of Apalachicola, State of Florida, having taken or subscribed the oath required by Law and having sworn that himself owning 6/8th, Benjamin Ellison 1/8th, and G. Buckman 1/8th, both of same place, are the only owner of the Ship or Vessel called the Jesse Richards of Apalachicola whereof said John Cook is at present Master and is a citizen of the Confederate States, and that said Ship or Vessel was built in the State of New Jersey in the year 1855, as per Enrolment No. 8, issued at the port of Apalachicola, on 25th October 1860, now surrendered, nationality changed..." The certificate goes on to describe the dimensions of the vessel: "... said Enrolment having certified that the said ship or vessel... has one deck and two masts, and that her length is Sixty eight 8/12 feet, her breadth twenty three feet, her depth five 8/12 feet, and that she measures seventy five 32/95 tons, that she is a schooner, has a square stern and billet head..." The certificate concludes by changing the schooner''s port of registry from Apalachicola to Mobile, Alabama. The registrar of vessels for Mobile signs at the left margin, with a second individual - possibly the ship''s master, John Cook - signing at bottom left. The certificate is also marked "Temporary" at the left margin, and bears the note "''Number Three''" in red at top. It is matted and framed, and shows original folds with one small tear to the left edge and slight foxing, else very good. Such Confederate vessel registrations are few and far between.
