Description:

SOUTHERN CROSS OF HONOR AWARDED TO ONE OF "MOSBY''S RANGERS", WITH FLAG RELICS
An exceeding desirable example of the Southern Cross of Honor, this honor bestowed upon a particularly brave and intrepid member of Co. "B", 43rd Va. Cavalry Btn., better known as "Mosby''s Rangers". The 2 1/8" tall (overall) medal bears an attached name panel with the recipient''s name: "ROBT. M. HARROVER" engraved thereon. The obverse displays the Confederate battle flag placed on the center thereof surrounded by a wreath, with the inscription "United Daughters [of the] Confederacy to the U.C.V." on the four arms of the cross. The reverse of the medal is the motto of the Confederate States of America, "Deo Vindice" and the dates "1861 1865" also surrounded by a laurel wreath. The arms of the cross bear the inscription "Southern Cross of Honor". Also present are two periods of period cloth identical to those used in the construction of flags, one red piece 2 1/4" x 4", one white piece 2" x 5". These relics accompanied the medal when it was purchased by its last owner, a lifetime collector of Confederate and GAR/UCV items. We speculate that these could possibly have been pieces of one of Mosby''s regimental flags kept by Montgomery as a keepsake, although this would be difficult to prove. Private ROBERT MONTGOMERY HARROVER (1843-1917) served with distinction under Mosby. On Oct. 22, 1863, while scouting inside the enemy''s lines in Fairfax, Va., he was captured and soon tried for treason for having deserted following his enrollment. Confined for ten months, he and a Mississippi member of the Jeff Davis Legion made a rope of their bedding and slid from their window in the Old Capital Prison. Harrover made for the home of a friend, who supplied civilian clothes and helped him flee through Georgetown. Near Rockville, he joined a band of Marylanders heading south, and they provided him with sidearms. En route, they captured a picket post and seized the horses, making good their escape. Post-war, Harrover''s first application for pardon was refused, but upon Grant''s personal recommendation, Harrover was finally "forgiven". After a later life as a salesman, Harrover passed in 1917. A great lot, especially with the addition of the mysterious flag relics.
