A fine lot of fourteen items signed by Confederate politicians representing the state of Alabama, includes: JOHN GILL SHORTER (1818-1872) Civil War Governor of Alabama from 1861-2, defeated by Thomas Watts in 1863. Signature ‘Jno Gill Shorter' in black ink on State of Alabama one dollar banknote, 6 x 2.75 in. printed at Montgomery, Jan, 1, 1863. Toned, shows folds overall, with archival tape marks to the verso, else very good. WITH: A second signature of JOHN GILL SHORTER with sentiment in black ink on a 3.5 x 1 in. slip of paper cut from the conclusion of a letter. Mounted, shows a horizontal fold and adhesive stains, else very good. WITH: THOMAS H. WATTS (1819-1892) Confederate Attorney General, resigned in 1863 to become Governor of Alabama until war's end. Partly-printed war-date D.S., 1p. 8 x 6.5 in., Montgomery, April 28, 1864, an Alabama treasury warrant authorizing the payment of $1,004.50 to a Col. William H. Fowler. Watts signs at center right in black ink. Shows a horizontal fold, slightly toned at the edges, else fine. WITH: ANDREW B MOORE (1807-1873) Governor of Alabama from 1857 to 1861, advocated for secession and organized the seizure of Pensacola. Signature ‘A. B. Moore' with sentiment in black ink on a 3 x 1 in. slip of paper cut from a letter. Mounted, toned, else very good. WITH: NICHOLAS DAVIS, JR. (1825-1874) Delegate to Alabama's secession convention and Representative to the provisional Confederate Congress, later fled behind Union lines after becoming dissatisfied with the war. Scarce A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Blountsville, AL, [ca. March 9, 1854], to a Mr. Benham, requesting that his correspondent bring a volume of the Alabama reports with him on an upcoming visit. He signs ‘Nick Davis Jr.' at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds, slightly ragged and toned at the left edge, else very good. WITH: CLEMENT C. CLAY, JR. (1816-1882) Confederate Senator for Alabama until his defeat in 1863, when he was made Confederate agent to Canada. Bold signature ‘C. C. Clay, Jr.' in black ink on an irregular 6 x 1 in. slip of paper. With a pencil identifying inscription at right, toned, with mounting traces to the verso, else very good. WITH: WILLIAM L. YANCEY (1814-1863) Confederate agent to obtain diplomatic recognition from England and France, later elected to the Confederate Senate and died in office. Signature ‘W. B. Yancey' in blue ink on a 3 x 1.5 in slip of paper. Mounted, toned, else very good. WITH: JAMES S. DICKINSON (1818-1882) Alabama Representative to the Confederate Congress. Signature in black ink on a 3.25 x 2.25 in. card, adding his position and state. Mildly toned, with mounting traces to the verso, else very good. WITH: EDMUND S. DARGAN (1805-1879) Alabama Representative to the first Confederate Congress. Signature ‘E S Dargan' in black ink on a 6 x 2 in. slip of paper cut from an album page, adding ‘Mobile Alabama'. Toned, with the signature of Maine Representative to the U.S. House HEZEKIAH WILLIAMS (1798-1886) on the verso, else very good. WITH: JABEZ L. M. CURRY (1825-1903) Alabama Representative to the provisional and first Confederate Congresses. Signature ‘J. L. M. Curry in black ink on a 6.5 x 3 in. slip of paper cut from and album page, adding ‘Talladega Alabama'. Mildly toned, with a pencil identifying inscription at bottom and the signature of Maryland Representative to the U.S. House JAMES A. STEWART (1808-1879) on the verso, else very good. WITH: MARCUS H. CRUIKSHANK (1826-1881) Defeated Jabez Curry for a seat in the second Confederate House. Signature in black ink on a 3.75 x 2.5 in. card, adding his position and state. Toned, with mounting traces to the verso, else very good. WITH: DAVID CLOPTON (1820-1892) Alabama Representative to both Confederate Congresses. Signature in black ink on a 4.75 x 2.25 in. slip of paper, adding his state. Mildly toned, with mounting traces and a pencil identifying inscription to the verso, else very good. WITH: WILLIAM P. CHILTON (1810-1871) Alabama Representative to the provisional and both full both Confederate Congresses. Signature ‘W. P. Chilton' in black ink on a 2 x 0.75 in. slip of paper. Mounted, with adhesive stains, else very good. WITH: WILLIAM R. W. COBB (1807-1864) U.S. Representative from Alabama, elected to the Confederate House in 1863 but did not take his seat, expelled by unanimous vote due to suspected disloyalty, killed by an accidental discharge of his own pistol while erecting a fence on his plantation. Scarce signature ‘W. R. W. Cobb' with sentiment in black ink on a 3.75 x 1.5 in. slip of paper cut from a latter. Mounted, toned, else very good. Fourteen pieces.
