Description:

CONFEDERATE GENERALS WILLIAM R. PECK, CLEMENT A. EVANS AND JOHN B. GORDON
A very fine association set of signed endorsements on the verso of a war-date letter, 1p. legal folio, ‘Camp Near Petersburg', Jan. 16, 1865, from a Capt. William H. Wall of the 2nd Louisiana Infantry Regiment, permitting an ordnance sergeant under his command, William Clegg, to go to Wilmington, North Carolina on furlough. Below his captain's message, Clegg adds his own plea for leave to make the journey, addressed to Col. Walter H. Taylor, Chief of Staff of the Army of Northern Virginia. On the verso, Capt. Wall adds an additional endorsement. The letter next bears the signed endorsement of WILLIAM R. PECK (1818-1871), Confederate brigadier general who served in the Overland and Gettysburg campaigns, commander of the famed Louisiana Tigers. He signs ‘Wm R Peck' in black ink, with another hand adding his rank ‘Col Comdg', which he would hold until his promotion to brigadier general the following month. The letter next bears the A.E.S. of CLEMENT A. EVANS (1833-1911), Confederate brigadier general who saw action at Second Manassas, Antietam, and Fredericksburg, later an influential minister and author. He writes ‘Resply ford appd' and signs ‘C A Evans' in black ink, adding his rank ‘Br Genl Comg'. The letter next bears the signed endorsement of JOHN B. GORDON (1832 – 1904), Confederate major general who led a brigade at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, and crushed Grant's line at the Wilderness. He boldly signs ‘J B Gordon' in black ink as commander of the 2nd Army Corps, with his rank added below in another hand. The request is finally approved ‘By order of Gen. Lee', the endorsement signed by Lee's assistant adjutant general, Lt. Col. CHARLES S. VENABLE (1827-1900). The letter then bears an additional endorsement by Capt. Wall and a major, granting Clegg pay. The letter shows folds throughout, with major splits thereto repaired with cello tape on both sides but not affecting any signatures, and with some chips to the edges, otherwise in very good overall condition.
