CONFEDERATE PAROLE, GAINESVILLE, ALABAMA
Rare partly-printed D.S. 1p. oblong 8vo., Gainesville, Ala., May 11,1865 a parole issued to Pvt. J. M. Cotton of the 7th Tennessee Cavalry. The document, numbered "15" at top, reads, in part: "J. [M.] Cotton Private of K Company 7th Regiment Tennessee Cavalry C.S.A., residing in Fayette county Tennessee having been, with the approval of the proper authorities, paroled, is permitted to return to his home, not to be disturbed by the United States authorities, so long as he observes his parole and the laws in force where he may reside." The company captain has endorsed the parole on the verso: "I certify that within named Soldier real owner of one horse J. A. Anderson Capt. Co K 7th Tenn regt Cav" The 7th Regiment participated in Nathan Bedford Forrest's most spectacular victory at Brice's Cross Roads on June 10, 1864. One weak fold repaired on verso, light soiling, minor holes from ink erosion, else very good condition.
