21ST N.C. SERGEANT'S APPOMATTOX PAROLE, OATH OF ALLEGIANCE AND WRITTEN STATEMENT
A fine and rare collection of three documents relative to the surrender and parole of Sgt. Francis. M. Eccles of the 21st North Carolina and includes a partly-printed D.S. "Lt. L. E. Powers Comdg. company" 1p. oblong 8vo. Appomattox, Court House, Apr. 14, 1865 being a pass to allow Eccles "...Paroled Prisoner of the Army of Northern Virginia, has permission to go to his home, and there remain undisturbed.". Vertical folds, minor marginal wear, else very good. Offered together with Eccles' oath of allegiance, a partly-printed D.S. 1p. oblong 12mo., Davidson County, N.C. Sept. 7, 1865 in which he swears (or affirms), "in presence of Almighty God, that I will henceforth faithfully support, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Union of the States thereunder; and that I will, in like manner, abide by and faithfully support all laws and proclamations which have been made during the existing rebellion with reference to the emancipation of slaves..." signed by Eccles and two justices of the peace. One vertical fold, lightly toned, else very good. Also offered together with an A.L. by Eccles, 1p. oblong 8vo., "Camp 21st. N.C. Troops" Apr 10, 1865, a statement by Eccles: "The army of Northern Va. surrendered to Gen. Grant about 10 O['clo]ck April the 10th Near Appomattox Court House. The Confederate forces numbering about 20000 and the Federals under Grand numbered about 60000[.] We evacuated Petersburg on the night of the2nd of April marched about 6 miles till daylight marched all day on the third the distance of 6 miles". Eccles enlisted in the in the 21st North Carolina at age 19 on May 6, 1861. The Lt. Powers who signed Eccles' parole served in the Confederate Army from May 20, 1861 and was wounded at Sharpsburg (Antietam). Minor marginal chips, folds, else very good. Appomattox paroles alone are the most desireable - only very rarely are they encountered along with their corresponding Oaths of Allegiance and a soldier's notes about the circumstances surrounding them, Three pieces.
