CONFEDERATE P.O.W. PLAYS BASEBALL TO PASS TIME
Good content Confederate prisoner's letter mentioning playing baseball to pass time, A.L.S., 1p. large 4to., Camp Douglas, Chicago, Mar. 2, 1862 in which Cpl. Thomas D. Weir of the 14th Miss. Infy. writes his cousin. In part: "...I had heard from Miss through a Pittsburg prisoner who was a nurse to the wounded at that battle. Ogletree went to the Hospital yesterday with Pneumonia...Wolve, Williamson, Fitzgerald, Dolf are at Home and not in the Union Army as we supposed. The Company from Choctaw was Captured at Island #10...They say Lieutenant McCall was sent to Columbus. Will you hunt him out...He was in Col. Baker's 1st Ala Miss. & Tenn. Reg...The Boys keep pretty cheerful. They amuse themselves by whittling...playing ball, cards, drafts, chess & reading the Bible...". With envelope. Some brittleness and light toning due to age, else quite good.
