CONFEDERATE GENERALS (3)
Good lot of three items signed by Confederate generals, includes: WALTER GWYNN (1802-1881), Major general of Virginia Volunteers and brigadier general of North Carolina state troops, called upon to reconnoiter the approaches to Fort Sumter prior to the war, he then oversaw the construction of fortifications at Sewall's Point and participated in the Battle of Big Bethel. Signature in black ink on a 3.25 x 1.5 in. slip of paper, adding his rank ‘Major General C. S. A.' Mounted to a larger card, else very good. WITH: EDWARD L. THOMAS (1825–1898), Confederate brigadier general, present for every major battle and campaign fought by the Army of Northern Virginia. Signature in black ink on a 3.5 x 1.75 in. card, adding his rank ‘Brig Genl C. S. A.' Chipped at one corner, shows mounting remnants on the verso, else very good. WITH: EDMUND W. RUCKER (1835-1924), Confederate cavalry officer who served under Forrest in the Army of Tennessee, lost his arm and was captured at the battle of Nashville. Commanded several brigades and unofficially considered a brigadier general, but never formally commissioned. Signature ‘Edmd. W. Rucker' in black ink on a 3 x 2 in. slip of paper cut from the conclusion of a letter, adding his rank ‘Late Brig. Genl Forrest's Cavalry'. Mounted to a larger card, else very good. Three pieces.
