Description:

CONFEDERATE COLONELS HENRY B. MCCLELLAN AND WALTER H. TAYLOR
A fine association pair of signatures on a partly-printed war-date D.S. on late-war ‘hardship' paper, 1p. oblong 8vo., [n.p.], April 16, 1864, an ‘Extract, General Orders No. 62', granting a Barrett Watson of Williams C. Wickham's 4th Virginia Cavalry, under Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, permission to return to his residence to procure horses to replace those lost or killed. Signed by command of Maj. Gen. J. E. B. Stuart in black ink by HENRY B. MCLELLAN (1840-1904), as ‘H. B. McClellan', a Confederate colonel and cousin of Union general George B. McClellan who served as Stuart's chief of staff, and was at his deathbed following his mortal wound at Yellow Tavern. The order is further countersigned as approved by order of Lee by WALTER H. TAYLOR (1838-1916), as ‘W H Taylor', Confederate colonel and Lee's aide-de-camp, later adjutant general of the Army of Northern Virginia. The order is further endorsed on the verso by order of Col. Thomas T. Munford, signed by his adjutant. Taylor's signature is a tad light, and the document shows heavy folds overall with some splits thereto, somewhat ragged at the edges, otherwise in very good condition.
