CONFEDERATE COLONELS CHEW (2)
Good pair of items signed by notable Confederate colonels, includes: ROBERT S. CHEW (1828-1886), Colonel commanding Corse's Brigade of Pickett's Division, assigned to guard duty at Hanover Junction during Gettysburg, thus missing his division's disastrous charge which killed most of its field-level officers. Manuscript D.S. ‘Robt. S. Chew', 1p. oblong 4to., [n.p.], June 26, [n.y], a provision return for the hospital of the 30th Virginia, signed at the conclusion by a surgeon and countersigned as approved by Chew in black ink below, adding his rank ‘Lt. Col. Comdg. Regt.' Shows folds and slight toning to the edges, else very good. WITH: R. PRESTON CHEW (1843-1921), Colonel commanding horse artillery under Turner Ashby and Stonewall Jackson, and later under J. E. B. Stuart at the Wilderness, Petersburg, Gettysburg and Appomattox. Partly-printed D.S. ‘R. P. Chew', 2pp. oblong 4to., Charlestown, WV, May 22, 1891, a stock certificate for twenty-four shares in the Charlestown Mining, Manufacturing and Improvement Company. Chew signs at bottom as president of the company in black ink. Very good to fine. Two pieces.
