Description:

Fine example of one of the most iconic firearms of the Civil War, the Colt Model 1860 Army revolver. This percussion cap-and-ball weapon, 7 ¾" barrel, 13 ¾" overall, .44-caliber, is marked with the serial number "54489" on the base of the butt, before the brass trigger guard, on the underside of the frame and the barrel, and on the rebated, unfluted cylinder. All components appear to be matching. The top of the barrel is marked: "Address Col. Saml Colt New-York U.S. America", while the cylinder is marked "Pat. Sept. 10th 1850", and the left side of the frame is marked "Colts Patent". U.S. Army inspector's initials appear on the left-hand side of the rear of the barrel and just behind the trigger guard, while a faint inspector's cartouche appears on the right-hand grip. The grips are walnut, and show handling marks and dings, with wear at the bottom edges and small chips to the front toe. The iron barrel, frame, cylinder, loading arm and hammer all show an even brown patina, with some minor surface pitting overall. The brass trigger guard and grip strap show nice patina. The bore is dark and appears to show some slight pitting, but the rifling is very strong and sharp. The cylinder advance is smooth and well-timed, and the hammer cocks and fires in good order. NRA grade very good to fine.
