Description:

.36-caliber Colt 1851 Navy cap-and-ball revolver,7 ½" barrel, 13 ¼" overall, is marked with the serial number "141406" on the base of the butt, before the brass trigger guard, on the underside of the frame and the barrel, with the partial serial number "1406" on the plain, unengraved cylinder and on the loading lever. The only non-matching component appear to be the wedge, which is stamped "3 3". The top of the barrel is faintly marked "Address Col. Saml Colt New-York U.S. America". The left-hand side of the frame is marked "Colt's Patent" below the cylinder, and the left-hand side of the brass trigger guard strap is marked "36 Cal". The weapon shows no U.S. military inspector's cartouches, indicating private purchase. The grips are walnut, and show handling marks and dings, with wear at the bottom edges and small chips to the front toe. The metal shows a mottled grey patina overall, with some slight pitting and small dings evident on the barrel. The brass trigger guard and grip strap remain bright. The bore is dark and shows some pitting, but the rifling and crown is very strong and sharp. The cylinder advance is smooth and well-timed, and the hammer cocks and fires in good order. A serial number search indicates that this firearm was manufactured in 1863. NRA grade very good to fine.
