Description:

JEAN COCTEAU (1889-1963) French poet, novelist and playwright, author of Les Enfants Terribles, and one of the most creative artists of this century as well. Fine content A.L.S. "Jean Cocteau " 1p. 4to., [Paris], [n.d.], in French to "Gentlemen", in part: "...What I have to say about Eliette Schenneberg can be written in a few lines, and there is no need for long sentences to talk about her. Her voice was fantastic, clear, sweet, poignant, and it dwelled in a noble soul and body. Moreover, that beautiful mechanism was animated by a rare intelligence. For her performance in 'Antigone', I demanded from her what most singers reject: my request for perfect costume, hairdo, demeanor, gestures and syntax...Never did Eliette consider my demands an obstacle...I am proud to salute this woman who died consumed by her own inner fire... ". Mezzo-soprano Eliette Schenneberg (b. 1908) debuted at the Palais Garnier in 1934 with Vincent d'Indy's L'Etranger, and went on to perform many memorable operas. Cocteau's Antigone was performed in 1922, set to music by Paul Honegger, and featured sets by Pablo Picasso and costumes by Coco Chanel. Folds, a couple of minor marginal splits, overall very good. $500-600
