Description:

THOMAS READE ROOTES COBB (1823-1862) Confederate brigadier general who formed Cobb's Legion, fought in the Seven Days and at Second Bull Run, killed in action at Fredericksburg. Very rare and most emphatic war-date A.L.S. "T. R. R. Cobb", 4pp. 8vo., Athens, Ga., Feb. 23, 1862 to Georgia Gov. Joseph E. Brown. In part: "...if my volunteers are not counted as a part of the quota of Georgia - I should be placed in the position of endeavoring to force the State to place in the field four thousand troops more than her proper proportion. I am not willing to do this & will abandon any enterprise before I will attempt it...My Legion went thro you and I desire its increase to do the same - I wish no company that does not prefer to come to me - & all I ask of you is to allow such companies as do so desire to be mustered at once into my Legion so as to complete its organization...I want all my companies at the same point so as to organize into Regiments...I have applied to Pres't Davis for his consent & have no doubt of obtaining it...What I ask of you now is to give your consent based on that condition...My Legion will operate on the upper boundary of Georgia, when it is completed...". Some soiling with a toned fold on last page, clear of signature, else very good. $2,000-3,000
