Description:

CIVIL WAR "TRAITOR" BROADSIDE
Rare war-date broadside, 1p. 12" x 24", New York, Aug. 29, 1863, headed, "AN ABOLITION Traitor". The broadside, credited to "A Democratic Workingman", attempts to drum up anger against the South and support for the Union cause amongst white working-class males by quoting Southern sources such as Robert Toombs and the Richmond Enquirer as disparaging Northern workingmen. In part: "There are traitors in the North as well as in the South, and there are abolitionists in the South as well as in the North. Some of the Southern abolitionists have strange views in regard to slavery and abolition...Mr. Toombs believes that slavery will die out, when the wages of white workingmen are run down so low that 'capital cannot afford to own labor;' in other words, when free white workingmen are reduced to the same level as negro slaves, then negroes will be set free...These are the sentiments advocated by men who are doing their utmost to destroy the Union, overthrow the institutions of popular freedom, and reduce free white workingmen to the same political, social, and moral condition as their slaves...". A rare and important broadside, reflecting the reality that anti-slavery and abolitionist sentiments were neither clear nor uniform, even in the North. Toned and with soiling and chipping around the margin, good.
