Lot 192
192. CIVIL WAR SOLDIER'S CARRIED GAME BOARD A very rare war-date Union soldier's white and black oilcloth portable checkerboard published by S. D. Hayden, Boston in 1861. The board, measuring approx. 11 1/2" square when open, can be folded to a compact size. Attached on the verso are two printed patriotic songs, entitled: "ADDRESS to the UNITED STATES SOLDIERS, 1861" and " A SONG FOR CAPTAIN AND SOLDIERS, 1861". A multicolored American flag and a rather interesting label boldly entitled: "WHY SHOULD ANY MAN SWEAR?" Gives ten reasons why swearing should be avoided. In part: "...1st It is mean. A man of high moral standing would almost as soon steal a sheep as swear...4th It is ungentlemanly. A gentleman according to Webster, is a genteel man, well bred, refined...6th It is foolish. 'Want of decency is want of sense'...". Minor wear with some soiling, else very good. A rare personal soldier artifact being the first we have seen, and a great addition to any collection. $700 - 900
