Description:

CIVIL WAR LETTER FROM NORTHERN WOMAN TO HER SOUTHERN SISTER
A fine content A.L.S. of one "Cordelia" 2pp. 8vo., Lyons, Nov. 2, 1861, to her friend/relative "Eunice", in part: "...I received your interesting letter...it is truly heartsickening to see what a dire calamity the accursed institution of slavery has finally brought upon our once prosperous nation. It seems as if our national troubles were growing darker and blacker, until my short-sightedness sees us plunged into one eternal abyss iof darkness, though the old saying is the darkest hour is just before day, may God in his mercy order it so now, for my part I cannot see the least ray of light through the impenetrable darkness of slavery & secession. I fear those traitors are bound to conquer & we as a free people doomed to eternal shame and disgrace. Why is it our side is so tardy? Is it to give the rebels ample time to get good ready, that they may without fail achieve a great victory? I feel it will prove so...You wrote just what I have long wanted to know about, that is just how you were situated. It is a mystery to me how you have lived among those savages as long as you have. We at the north think it hard times, but we really know nothing of hard times, nor of trials, troubles, privations & distress in general...I believe it would be better for you all to come north for awhile....". With more social content following, very good.
