1861 ARLINGTON HOUSE HEADQUARTERS LETTERS
A good group of three war-date letters, 7pp.,Oct.- Nov.1861, by Alfred Wanamaker, a volunteer aide on the staff of Lt. Col. Rufus Ingalls while Ingalls served as aide de camp to McClellan. In part: "...[Philadelphia, Oct. 11, 1861] we are going to leave this city for Washington...our company will be exposed to no danger...our duty will be to drive from Washington City to the camp and back...we expect to be stationed in W. City. Our company...is nearly 200...they are all clever fellows...[Arlington Heights, Va., Oct. 13, with original stamped patriotic cover] ...things look very much like war...I was walking around headquarters and...got to talking with the cook that cooks for the men that takes care of the officers horses...four regiments moved from here...to Munson's Hill. Our men are crossing the river near Harpers Ferry and driving the rebels...forty thousand men is to remain to guard Washington...direct your letters to...Headquarters, Arlington Hights, Va., in care of Col. Ingalls...[Arlington House, Nov. 27] ...I was at a review yesterday there were not near so many troops there but more spectators. The scene was magnificent...the soldiers performed their work with ease and beauty. They were all regulars in the United States service...our men captured about 100 secession cavalry today. They had a prisoner here about a week ago. I saw him talked with him. I will be home next week if nothing happens...". With a1857 letter written by Wanamaker to his wife with social content. Worthy of further research to determine in just what capacity Wanamaker served Col. Ingalls, very good.
