CIVIL WAR DIARY OF SGT. JOHNSON MILLER
1864 Civil War diary of Sgt. Johnson Miller of Co. E., 14th Ohio Vols., about 130pp. 32mo., 3 pencil entries per page, setting forth his service during Sherman Atlanta campaign and as a ward supervisor at a Nashville hospital following his wounding. Some of the content concerns action at Resaca and New Hope Church. He opens the diary noting: "...I am a soldier fighting for my country...I have been wounded and disabled for some time but I shall soon be able to rejoin my regiment...I do not want to leave my comrades until this bloody struggle is closed..." and resumes daily entries upon his return to service at Nashville on Feb. 14, 1864. In part: "...skirmishing on the picket lines from daylight until about 10 AM...ordered to march immediately with one day's rations...moved to the front and took our place on the line of battle...the brigade was moved to the right and formed in line of battle, continual and heavy skirmishing...the rebels had evacuated their works...we advanced and took possession...followed up the retreating rebels until dark...hard firing in front but did not ascertain any rebels...our division is held in reserve to protect communications...heavy firing most of the day...this is the most successful campaign...took our place in the first line of works...the rebel pickets were driven in...advanced at 4 PM and drove the rebels into their second line of works...the company went on skirmish line at midnight. Was wounded at 12 o'clock...Taken to Big Shanty...I am far from the scenes of blood and carnage...but I am not removed from the dreadful effects of the carnage...for here are the wounded and mangled and mutilated men that have been sent to the rear...there are a great many severely wounded causing amputation and numbers are disabled forever...A man who was non compos mentis [insane] terminated his life this morning by leaping from a window...Here I am in the hospital surrounded by the mangled and emaciated bodies of my sick and wounded comrades...I cannot hear the pleasant voices of friends but the groans of the suffering...Brigadier Gen'l T. F. Meagher delivered and address...the city is invested by the rebel troops. There is some skirmishing going on between the two armies...a great battle has been fought and victory won...made a detail of 25 men...and charged the courthouse...". A few entries are a tad light, and Miller was in the habit of writing in a tiny and, so a very careful reading may bring out a great more detail. In original black covers.
