Description:

CIVIL WAR ARCHIVE OF SERGEANT WELLWOOD GILLESPIE
An archive of 20 letters attributed to Union soldier Sgt. Wellwood C. Gillespie who served in the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry, all in various sizes and ranging from June 1862 to Aug. 1865. A majority of the letters were written to Emma, who would later become his wife, from the Union General Hospital where he was recovering from a serious leg injury. After his time in the hospital, he would reenlist as a private in August and serve for the remainder of the war. One letter from June 25, 1862 includes an interesting passage describing how ‘…I do not think we will march again until the great battle is fought at Richmond, but this may be before this letter reaches you…' A letter from Dec. 31, 1864 describes how ‘…Our men completely out-general the Rebs of late. Our General can take thirty thousand men and go where they please…' and another letter from June 7, 1865 mentions that he ‘…will send photo of one of my mess mates that was killed this last spring just the day before Lee surrendered…'. Most of these letters are in fine condition, with the exception of the first which has burn marks and a large hole affecting the text.
