CHIEF JOHN GRASS
(1837 - 1918) Lakota chief who fought at the Little Bighorn. Grass and Gall served as rivals to Sitting Bull after the latter surrendered in 1881. In 1888 Grover Cleveland met with Sitting Bull, Gall, and Grass to establish the Standing Rock Agency which was confirmed in 1889. Silver gelatin original D.F. Barry photograph of John Grass, a.k.a. Mato Watakpe, or Charging Bear, 4 1/2" x 7 1/2" oval portrait with original 8" x 13 1/2" frame that has considerable biographical information written in pencil on recto, evidently by somebody acquainted with Grass, A. B. Welch, or both. Frame has the original label on it from D.J. Price Framers Dickson, N.D. This pristine Barry photograph features Barry's blind stamp on both the photo and the original gray Barry mount, with Barry's Superior label on recto. Titled Chief John Grass in white ink on the mount. Very fine.
