(Chicago Fire) A fine description of the Chicago Fire given in a letter by city native James Monaghan, A.L.S. 4pp. 8vo., Chicago, Oct. 28 [1871] he writes his parents: We have had a great fire in Chicago .. not quenched for a week It began on the west side and cross[ed] the bridges to the south. The wind blowing toward the north swept all clear... had enough water to quench the fire till it came to the reservoir... largest and finest buildings burnt... some [buildings] blown up with powder... ten thousand people left homeless... fetch soldiers here... little boy hung to a post for [arson] Filled with great content. Moderate soiling.
